If your tank has started leaking or the showers have gone lukewarm, the first thing you want to know is how much to replace a hot water system, and whether the number you have been quoted is fair. On the Gold Coast in 2026, most households pay between $1,000 and $5,300 installed. Where you land depends on three things: the type of system, whether you are swapping like for like, and whether a heat pump rebate comes off the price.
Below are real installed price bands for electric storage, gas continuous flow and heat pump systems, plus the heat pump rebate worked out from the Clean Energy Regulator’s own 2026 figures. A lot of rebate numbers online are now out of date.
How much to replace a hot water system: 2026 price bands
These are typical installed prices across the Gold Coast and South East Queensland for a standard like-for-like replacement, including the new unit, labour, a compliant tempering valve and removal of the old tank.
| System type | Typical size | Installed price | STC rebate (2026) | What you pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric storage (small) | 125L – 160L | $1,000 – $1,600 | Not eligible | $1,000 – $1,600 |
| Electric storage (family) | 250L – 315L | $1,400 – $2,500 | Not eligible | $1,400 – $2,500 |
| Gas continuous flow | 20 – 26 L/min | $1,800 – $3,300 | Not eligible | $1,800 – $3,300 |
| Heat pump | 250L – 315L | $3,300 – $5,300 | About $500 – $640 off | $2,700 – $4,800 |
Switching system types costs more than these bands. We cover those extras further down.
Electric storage: the cheapest to buy
Electric storage is still the lowest upfront cost and the most common emergency replacement. A small 125L to 160L unit suits one or two people and typically lands between $1,000 and $1,600 installed. A 250L to 315L family tank sits between $1,400 and $2,500, depending on brand, element size and whether it runs on an off-peak tariff.
A typical job looks like one our team handled in Robina: a cracked tank leaking from the base. The plumber drained and removed the old unit, fitted a new 250L 3.6kW electric storage system, and replaced the valve train and drain lines. That is a textbook like-for-like swap.
The catch is running cost. Electric storage is the most expensive system to run, as our guide to the best hot water system for a family of 4 shows.
Gas continuous flow: the gas supply decides the price
Replacing an existing gas continuous flow unit with a new one generally costs $1,800 to $3,300 installed. The spread comes from flow rate, brand, and whether the flue and gas connections line up with the new model.
Moving from electric storage to gas is where the price climbs. You need a gas supply at the right location, either natural gas or LPG bottles, and a continuous flow unit also needs a power point nearby. Without natural gas in your street, bottle hire becomes an ongoing cost.
Heat pump: the STC rebate, netted off properly
A 250L to 315L heat pump costs roughly $3,300 to $5,300 installed before any rebate. The federal Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme then takes a discount off at the point of sale. Here is how that discount is calculated.
How many STCs a Gold Coast heat pump earns in 2026
Every eligible heat pump is listed on the Clean Energy Regulator’s register of solar water heaters with a certificate count for each climate zone, based on a 10-year life. The whole Gold Coast, from Coomera down to Coolangatta, and the Tweed sit in Zone 3.
Because the scheme ends in 2030, that count is scaled down every year. The Regulator’s STC entitlement rules set a 2026 deeming period of five years, which means a multiplication factor of 0.5, rounded down to a whole certificate.
We ran that factor across the current register for the brands Gold Coast homes use most, including Rheem, Reclaim Energy, Stiebel Eltron, Rinnai, Dux, Thermann, Sanden and Solahart. In Zone 3, these units earn between 13 and 17 certificates in 2026, and most earn 14 to 16. With certificates trading at roughly $36 to $40, that is a discount of about $500 to $640 on most mainstream heat pumps.
A worked example
- Register rating: a 270L heat pump rated at 30 certificates for Zone 3.
- 2026 entitlement: 30 × 0.5 = 15 STCs.
- Discount: 15 × about $38 = roughly $570 off.
- Net price: a $4,500 installed quote becomes about $3,930.
- If you wait until 2027: the factor drops to 0.4, so the same unit earns 12 STCs and the discount falls by around $115.
Your installer normally creates the certificates and deducts the value from your invoice, so you should see it as a clear line item on your quote.
Why many online rebate figures are wrong
Plenty of websites still quote STC discounts of $800 to $1,200 on a heat pump. Those numbers come from earlier years, when the deeming period was longer. In 2026 they overstate the rebate by hundreds of dollars.
Some pages also still advertise a Queensland state rebate of $800 to $1,000 on heat pumps. That came from the Climate Smart Energy Savers program, which the Queensland Government confirmed has closed. If a quote leans on that rebate, ask questions before you sign.
What a compliant Queensland replacement includes
A cheap quote that skips compliance is not a cheaper job. Every Queensland replacement should include:
- A temperature control device: Business Queensland requires one on all new and replacement systems, limiting hot water at the tap to a maximum of 50°C.
- QBCC lodgement: installing or replacing the tempering valve is notifiable work, which your plumber must lodge with the QBCC within 10 business days.
- The right endorsement: heat pump and solar systems must be installed by a plumber holding the QBCC solar and heat pump endorsement.
- New valves and removal: a fresh valve train, relief drain and disposal of the old tank.
What pushes the price up
The bands above assume a straightforward swap. Quotes come in higher for:
- Changing system type: new gas lines, a dedicated power point or a new outdoor location for a heat pump.
- Difficult access: tanks in roof spaces, upstairs cupboards or tight side passages take longer to remove.
- Relocation: moving the system means new pipework, and a heat pump needs airflow and some distance from bedroom windows.
- Upsizing: a larger tank or higher flow rate costs more to buy.

Which system is the best value?
If you need hot water back today on a tight budget, a like-for-like electric or gas swap is the fastest, cheapest fix. If you can plan ahead, a heat pump’s lower running costs usually close the upfront gap within a few years, and the rebate will never be worth more than it is in 2026. Our step-by-step replacement guide explains what happens on installation day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a hot water system?
For a single faulty part on a system under about eight years old, repair is usually cheaper. Once the tank itself is leaking, it has to be replaced, because a rusted tank cannot be repaired.
How long does a hot water system replacement take?
A like-for-like swap usually takes 2 to 4 hours. Changing to a different system type takes around 4 to 6 hours, because of the extra gas, electrical or plumbing work.
Is there a heat pump rebate in Queensland in 2026?
Yes, but only the federal STC discount, which is worth around $500 to $640 on most mainstream heat pumps installed on the Gold Coast this year. The Queensland Climate Smart Energy Savers rebate has closed, so no state rebate currently applies to household heat pumps.
Do I have to claim the STC rebate myself?
No. In almost every case you assign the certificates to your installer, who takes the value off your invoice. Check that your quote shows the STC amount as its own line item.
How long does a new hot water system last?
Electric and gas systems typically last 8 to 12 years, while heat pumps often reach 10 to 15 years. Regular servicing and anode replacement help you reach the upper end.
